Solutions to Word Problems (Pg 129 onwards)
1. 40 cm
2. 90 cm
3. 132 cm²
4. 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4
Ans: 4 m
Even though the corners got cut away, each side still add up to be 1 m.
5. 85m²
6. 82 m (19 + 22 + 19 + 22)
7. 256 cm² (each side of the square is 24 - 4 - 4 = 18 cm)
8. 263 m²
Pg 135 - 140
1. 96 cm²
2. (a) 192 cm² (b) 58 cm
*Take note that each side of the square is 2 cm
3. 39 cm
4. (a) 168 m² (b) $10920
*For (a), find area of big rectangle then find area of small rectangle. The difference between them is the area of the foothpath.
5. $12 480
Total area of the land is 156 m².
6. Since the length is 2 units, divide the whole rectangle into two equally.
(72m² divided by 2 = 36 m²)
It forms 2 squares. Each square's area is 36 m². The length of each side is therefore 6 m.
The breadth is therefore 6 m.

2) A Nasty Accident - Pg 8,9
3) Bring your National Geographic Explorer Magazine
The use of 'that/which' as connector:
Pupils were taught how they should use 'that/which' to join sentences, in this case, the second sentence usually gives more description about the item.
For example:
•Mr Lee took the bottle to the canteen.
•The bottle was on top of the shelf.
Right: Mr Lee took the bottle that/which was on top of the shelf to the canteen.
Wrong: Mr Lee took the bottle to the canteen that/which was on top of the shelf.
The pupils had a good laugh at the wrong one as putting the word 'that/which' behind 'canteen' causes the description (on top of the shelf) to be describing the canteen instead. They were told that the description should follow closely behind the object it is describing. In this case, it should follow closely to 'the bottle'.

Adding Unrelated Fractions:
Today we learnt about adding fractions whose denominators are not multiples of one another.
First step is to find a common multiple between the two given denominators.
Next is to find the equivalent fractions using the common multiple as the denominator.
Pg 113 will serve as a practice for the pupils.
Note: If pupils have accidentally used another multiple as denominator, it does not affect the accuracy of the answer once they remember to express the answer in the simplest form.

30 March
1) Maths WB Pg 105 - 110 (2 pages were completed in class)
2) Cheesecake for Grandpa Pg 2,3,4,5 (pupils started one 1 of the pages in class)
English
Today, we talked about collective nouns. Words like group, team, family, audience, etc.
These words refer to a group of people, things or animals.
Sometimes, they will take on a plural verb and other times, a singular verb.
They will take on plural verbs when the things/people/animals in the group are seen individually.
Example: The team move off in different directions.
In this case, the people in the team must have all walked away in different directions and hence they are seen as individuals . Therefore, plural verb is used.
At times they take on singular verbs.
Example: The audience cheers for the million-dollar winner.
The whole block of audience cheers as a group, not seen as individual cheer-ers.
Pupils had to discuss in pairs why they feel a certain sentence should have taken on a plural/singular verb before I revealed the answers in class.
Mathematics
Pupils were given different statements in which they have to decide if they agree with them or disagree. They will also have to make use of what they have learnt for comparing fractions to verify their answers.
Examples:
1) Amy says that 1/5 is greater than 1/6.
2) Amy says that 3/9 is greater than 2/3.
Do you agree? Yes/No
They then had to check with some calculations and conversions.
Finally, they are also asked to justify why Amy might have said those statements. Example for 2, it is incorrect. Amy might have said that as she was comparing the fractions by the numerators only/the denominators only. This got the pupils thinking of the reasons why Amy got the statement wrong and some of the reasons given by the pupils coincided with common mistakes made by others when comparing fractions.

29 March
Homework:
1) Maths WS given in class on Comparing and Ordering Fractions
This year, the pupils will have to learn to compare improper fractions, mixed numbers and unrelated fractions.
To compare an improper fraction to a mixed number, just either
- convert the improper fraction to a mixed number and then compare
- convert the mixed number to an improper fraction and then compare
Unrelated fractions refer to fractions with denominators such that they are not multiples of one another. E.g. 3/5 and 1/3
To compare them, we have to find a common denominator..this can be done by finding a common multiple between 5 and 3.
